Voters Need to Know, Should Judge Persky Be Recalled?
Stanford Law Professor Michele Landis Dauber and retired Judge LaDoris Cordell will provide the pros and cons of recalling Judge Aaron Persky.
The Committee to Recall Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky was formed in 2016 following his controversial sentencing in the Brock Turner sexual assault case. Turner was convicted of sexual assault on an unconscious woman, and Persky sentenced him to six months in jail, three years of probation, and registration as a sex offender.
Led by Stanford Law Professor Michele Landis Dauber, the Recall has qualified for the June 5th ballot. The campaign website states, “Judge Persky’s sentencing of Brock Turner was consistent with other cases in which he appeared to favor athletes and other relatively privileged individuals accused of sex crimes or violence against women.”
Not everyone agrees that Judge Persky should be recalled, including retired Judge and now Social Commentator LaDoris Cordell. Read her Special to the Mercury News on this topic. She believes that a recall election “would have trial judges looking over their shoulders, testing the winds before rendering their decisions.”
